A. WILLIAM MAUPIN, FORMER NEVADA SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE, TO JOIN LIONEL SAWYER & COLLINS

February 2, 2010 – Lionel Sawyer & Collins is pleased to announce that retired Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court A. William Maupin will join the firm on March 15, 2010.

A highly regarded attorney prior to taking judicial office, Justice Maupin began his career in the legal field in 1971. Former Nevada Governor Bob Miller appointed him as a district court judge in Clark County, Nevada in 1993. While serving in this capacity, Justice Maupin received the highest rating for retention in 1994 and 1996 Las Vegas Review Journal/Clark County Bar Association surveys.

Justice Maupin was retained as a district judge by popular election in 1994, elected to the Nevada Supreme Court in 1996 and then re-elected in 2002. He once again received the highest rating for retention, this time as Supreme Court Justice in 1998 and 2004. He retired as Chief Justice in January of 2009.

Justice Maupin is expected to concentrate his practice in the areas of litigation, appellate work and legislative advocacy. During his 12 years of service on the Nevada Supreme Court, Bill Maupin was a respected legislative advocate for the judiciary.

About A. William Maupin
During his judicial career, Justice Maupin spearheaded the Nevada Court Annexed Arbitration system, one of the most comprehensive alternative dispute resolution programs in the United States. He also worked with Nevada judges and lawyers in re-vamping the Nevada Rules of Civil Procedure, and helped form commissions and committees to improve the quality of Nevada’s judicial system, including the current Nevada Supreme Court Judicial Code Commission. He’s the recipient of numerous awards including the Clark County Bar Association Roger D. Foley Professionalism Award (1997), the Clark County Liberty Bell Award (2008) and the Nevada Press Association “First Amendment Champion” Award (2008). As an A/V-rated attorney, Justice Maupin was a partner at Thorndal, Backus, Maupin and Armstrong. He received his J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law, ranking 9th in class. He received his B.A. from the University of Nevada Reno. Since 2002, Justice Maupin has worked with Friends of the Children of Las Cohabas, Haiti, Foundation, traveling to aid in the provision of eye care on behalf of the foundation to impoverished residents of Las Cohabas, Haiti.
